Description
At 10:30 every Saturday morning, the studio tour at Blue Ridge Motion Pictures offers the public an opportunity to see some of the secrets of movie production from an insider’s viewpoint. The tour includes a guided walk through the Studio’s sound stages, wet stage for water effects, the working set from the TV pilot Salsaman, re-enactment of scenes from projects filmed at BRMP Studios, production offices, props and equipment, and other aspects of filmmaking. At the end of the tour “The History of Movies” outlines a century of movie magic from the Silent Era to today, showing film footage, equipment, and memorabilia from each era.
Of special interest to area residents is the studio’s Backlot, which recreates the facades of a dozen area businesses for filming street scenes. Among the familiar sites reproduced is Beanstreets at the corner of College Street and Broadway in downtown Asheville. The Backlot also includes generic streets and exteriors, an industrial site, and 18 acres of wooded land for outdoor shoots.
Painting of the Backlot was done by local artists, volunteers, and area college students, helping cement the relationship between Blue Ridge Motion Pictures and the Western North Carolina community. According to studio head Leanne M. Campbell, “Everyone wants this to succeed because they know how much business a film studio can bring to our area. Before we opened the studio, the lack of facilities for sound, production, and post-production kept the local economy from getting the full benefits of film-making.”
A favorite spot for the film industry for more than 75 years, Asheville and the surrounding mountains have seen a resurgence of movie-making during the past two decades. Among the better-known features filmed in the area are Thunder Road (1958), Being There (1979), Dirty Dancing (1987), The Last of the Mohicans (1992), Richie Rich (1994), Nell (1994), My Fellow Americans (1995), Forces of Nature (1999), and Patch Adams (1999). The current Robert Redford thriller, The Clearing, is being shot in Asheville and at the Blue Ridge studio.
