"Candy Pete" Cero, a Greek sailor, was lured to Wichita, Kansas, for railroad work in 1883. But Pete became ill and the railroad crew left him behind when they moved on. Without railroad work to pay his way, Pete turned to candy-making in 1885. Cero's handmade candies became popular with Wichitans, and Pete's business grew.
Since Candy Pete, three generations of the Cero's family have carried on his tradition. In 1999, Ed Cero, the last of the family's confectioners, was ready to retire, but had no family member to take his place. With a goal of giving back to the community that had supported Cero's over the years, Ed turned to an unlikely buyer: The Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas. The Kansas Underground Salt Museum is 650 below the surface in the largest salt formation in the United States. The tour is via a underground tram. The tram will tour a still working salt mine. It will also tour excavated areas of the mine that are used as storage areas. The Old Muffin Factory is located in McPherson, Kansas, in the heart of wheat country. When Les and Kala Mason decided to form their business, Mason Marketing Co., in 1990, those Kansas wheat fields, combined with their mutual love of the baking arts, inspired them to create some of the most unique "designer" baking mixes available.
Those mixes include some of the usual as well as unusual flavors. For instance, muffin mixes are available from Apple Cinnamon to Watermelon. Pancake mixes range from Blueberry to Pina Colada.
